2016 GRANT RECIPIENTS

Boys and Girls Club of

Elizabethton/Carter County

Funding for the Boys and Girls Club of Elizabethton/Carter County provided the opportunity for girls ages 8-18 from low-income families to recognize opportunities for advanced education and career paths by providing weekly summer sessions throughout the year, divided by age groups, for ten weeks. These sessions focused on education, career preparation, financial literacy, relationship building, and positive attitudes. Successful women in the local area served as role models and mentors for various careers. This program was designed to encourage young women to gain the skills, confidence and awareness to aspire to higher education and successful careers.

Branches of Monroe County, Inc.

Funding for Branches of Monroe County provided support for a Residential Assistant to cover overnight and after hours on the premises. This helped in women and children fleeing domestic violence to achieve self-sufficiency by providing emergency shelter, advocacy, life skills training, case management, work-related skills, and transitional housing.

The CORE: Pearls of Grace/LMU

Funding for The CORE provided for one six-day, five-night summer institute, attended by 20 female rising high school seniors. With Pearls of Grace and LMU, The CORE is a collaborative adaptation of the Tusculum College 2014 model and expansion of the CORE/STAND Scott County Program funded in 2015. This institute provided life skills, work skills, and educational intervention to assist low-income and first-generation participants in finishing high school and entering/finishing a program of post-secondary education. The program seeks to empower underrepresented participants from some of the poorest counties to achieve academic and personal self-sufficiency, moving them out of the cycle of poverty and into the cycle of education, career preparation and personal development.

Red Legacy Recovery, Inc.

Funding for Red Legacy Recovery increased the availability for the van (purchased through the 2014 Women’s Fund grant) to transport clients three days per week for court/attorney/probation appointments, Red Legacy workshops (computer skills, parenting certification, relapse prevention and recovery skills), GED tutoring, and job interviews. This supported women who have experienced addiction, incarceration, and dependence on outside financial assistance by improving skills to obtain employment, regain custody of children, GED completion, pay outstanding fines, obtain a vehicle, and remain free from probation and incarceration.

Tusculum College

Funding for Tusculum College provided for 18 rising freshmen, sophomore, and/or junior high school women to attend a five-day residential institute known as the “Women’s Search for Success and Self-Sufficiency” program. The program provided assistance to low-income, first-generation high school women to complete high school and enroll in/complete college.

Alliance for Better Nonprofits

Funding for Alliance for Better Nonprofits provided Nonprofit Leadership Training for past grantees - focusing on evaluation and outcomes measurement.
